Essentials of Anatomy equips the artist with a thorough understanding of the structure and movement of the human figure along with techniques of visualization that will enable the artist to enjoy the expressive potential that figure drawing provides. A schematic of the anatomical figure is created and divided into eight zones. These zones constitute the torso and spine, the head, the brachia, the forearm, the hand, the thigh, the lower leg, and the foot. Each zone is explored in terms of its anatomy, mechanics, and musculature. Through lectures, demonstrations, and drawing from the live model, the artist integrates this information into a new drawing regimen or workflow.
Through a sequence of short and quickly executed studies in oil paint, students are challenged to hone seeing skills by quickly identifying the most significant forms, gestures, spatial relationships and sense of atmosphere. Students learn to depict the essence of the subject at hand in short 5 to 30 minute painting sessions. The studies can stand as paintings in their own right or source material for further paintings. Students will work both from a live model and still life. Recommended for students with painting experience.
Often daunting, the wonderfully complex head is an endless source of formal, pictorial, and metaphorical information. Students will work to surpass mere physical likeness, and discover how the expressive potential inherent in the head is directly affected by the organization of pictorial elements. This workshop is recommended for students who have previous drawing experience.
Experimental Drawing and the Figure is a course which helps the artist to develop techniques of visualization and utilizes the expressive sketch as a stimulus for creative development. The expressive sketch records a visual idea at its inception and becomes the foundation from which options are explored, ideas researched, and outcomes projected. Artistically, the act of drawing is the making of marks, designs and patterns on a surface. By definition, to draw actually means to act upon something and make it move. Movement–of both agent and object–is essential to the idea of drawing. In this course we explore how movement and gesture can enable creativity and enhance the flow experience. This course also introduces the concept of Metadata, (textures) as a way to enhance the figure in space.
The plein air painter is a witness to the light and in usually two hours can capture a sense of place with great authenticity. The challenge for some, is to take that sketch into the studio and elaborate on the subtle truths that a quick sketch often has. By utilizing the light model, carefully orchestrating compositional trajectories and visualizing the topological stage, it’s possible for the artist to imbue their studio conjured paintings with the authenticity of the sketch executed outside. Reference and sketches are provided by the students for their individual project focus. Recommended for students with painting experience.
Working the first day with one model and the second day with two models, participants will have an intensive opportunity to explore the structural and expressive qualities of the figure in pictorial space. Principles of composition and underlying geometry will be addressed through periodic critiques, as will mark, material, contour, edge, and relationship to the page. Students will look at the drawings of Old and Modern Masters such as Tiepolo, Schiele, Modigliani and more. Through concentrated and vigorous engagement with the figure in a dynamic environment the door to invention and transformation begins to open.
