Pastels come in both a chalk(pigment bound with gum arabic), and oils(pigment bound with oil). For purposes of illustration the following intro and materials guide to pastel painting will be based on the applocation of chalk pastels. An assortment of both soft and hard varieties of pastel chalks is preferred.The preliminary application of pastel is usually applied with softer pastels for coverage, and of these, darker colors predominate. A good sampling for a pastel chalks kit would be to have a least three values of each color of the primaries and the secondaries.
